Herbal Allies for Pets - Adored Beast

Our pets are important members of our families; they provide us with unconditional love and joy. As pet parents, we are constantly looking for ways to enrich their lives; herbs can be valuable allies in helping us maintain the health and well-being of our pets.

Herbs for pets

Many of the herbal remedies we use daily can also benefit our pets' health. Some of the most common herbs used by veterinary herbalists and homeopaths include:

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)

For hundreds of years, barberry has been used to support the liver, immune system, and digestive tract, most often used in cases of ulcers and gastritis. Berberine, a component in barberry, inhibits the growth of bacteria, making it a potent herb against harmful intestinal bacteria.

In pets, barberry is often used in cases of a sluggish liver, gallstones, jaundice, and ulcers.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is known for its wound-healing effects and is often used in topical formulas for bruises, cuts, and minor infections. This herb possesses anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Internally calendula has been used to relieve an upset stomach and may even help heal stomach ulcers.

In pets, calendula is often used in ear infections, infected anal glands, minor skin lesions, rashes, and to promote wound healing.

Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus)

Greater celandine has been used for hundreds of years to support bile production of both the liver and gallbladder, helping to break down fats while promoting toxin removal.

In pets, greater celandine is often used in cases of an underactive gallbladder, digestive problems, and liver disorders.

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinalis)

Dandelion is one of our most versatile and underrated herbal allies; it is full of vitamins and minerals that benefit the liver and kidneys. The root is used to stimulate digestion and bile from both the liver and gallbladder. This plant is often used for its diuretic effect because it doesn’t deplete potassium levels like other diuretics on the market.

In pets, dandelion is often used to support kidney health, anemia, and liver conditions.

Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)

Historically, horsetail has been used to support the urinary tract and prostate. This herb may be effective in healing burns, wounds, and sores when applied topically due to its anti-inflammatory effects. High in silica, this plant makes an excellent herbal ally for maintaining bone health.

In pets, horsetail may be used as a diuretic, to expel worms or parasites, and to help build healthy skin and coat.

St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

St John's-wort is an uplifting herbal ally, most commonly used to ease depression. This plant's antiviral and antibacterial properties may help increase wound tissue regeneration when applied topically. St John's wort also holds an affinity for the nerves; when used as an herbal oil, this plant may promote nerve healing in cases of nerve damage.

In pets, St John’s-wort may help heal minor wounds, ulcers, bruises, contusions, and ease nerve pain.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Goldenseal has been used for thousands of years for its antibacterial properties to assist in the healing of skin conditions such as rashes, wounds, infections, and eczema. This herbal ally helps support the immune system and lowers fevers when taken internally. As an anti-inflammatory, this plant may help ease colitis, peptic ulcers, and gastritis symptoms.

In pets, goldenseal is often used to promote skin health in cases of rashes and infections both topically and internally.

Milk Thistle (Cardus marianus)

Milk thistle is a super-star hepatoprotective herb, this class of herbs supports normal function and protects liver cells from damage. This herb is also considered a Hepatic Trophorestorative ally, nourishing the liver and restoring normal function. Milk thistle contains a flavonolignan compound called silymarin, responsible for the protective effects on the liver.

In pets, milk thistle is often used in cases of liver or kidney damage, jaundice, parvovirus recovery, skin disorders, and even tumors.

Herbal Products for Pets

Adored beast founder and products

Julie Anne, a lifelong animal lover, is the founder of Adored Beast apothecary. When her beloved dog developed colon cancer, Julie took him to the family herbalist. After following the herbalist's protocol, her vet found that the tumor had gone down from the size of a small egg to the size of a grape; this event sparked Julie's interest in homeopathy.

The actual lighting of the flame came later; while on a trip to Spain, Julie became sick with hemorrhagic gastritis. After seeing a homeopathic doctor, Julie was able to continue her backpacking trip within two days.

These experiences led Julie to enroll and graduate from a four-year Human Homeopathic Medicine Program, earning her DCH in ‘97 and qualifying for her RcsHom in 2002.

Adored beast products are the culmination of Julie’s journey as a veterinary holistic practitioner. Some of our favorite herbal supplements from Julie’s line include:
